Associate Professor Avra Sidiropoulou, Academic Coordinator of the MA Programme in «Theatre Studies» of the Open University of Cyprus, will be attending the international conference «PSi 29 ASSEMBLE», organised by the Performance Studies International on June 20-23, 2024 in London. The title of her talk is «Compositional practices as performative form and content: Documenting a director’s process of assemblage».
In current theatre practice, hybrid modes of artistic research and expression have progressively emerged as important constitutional tools. Her talk addresses the conference topic of assemblage, using a «practice-as-research» approach. Employing examples from her own work as professional director, Dr Sidiropoulou intends to document a method of «compositional dramaturgy», a process whereby image, movement, media, sound and, often, text develop simultaneously, each constantly adjusting to the other rather than serving a pre-set concept based on textual interpretation alone. She will discuss a number of strategies of symbiotic meaning-making that she has used in her recent productions of «Phaedra I-» (Tristan Bates, London 2019) and “Troy Too” (Here Arts Center, New York 2023).
